Subject: Excellent Abbott and Costello Show
A good Abbott and Costello one-hour show from January 1951. Some good routines from other acts, but mostly the famed comedy team. This was the year their "Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man" movie was released, which was one of their last quality movies.

This is where A&C really did shine, doing stand-up routine, comedy shtick, and short sketches. This broadcast includes my favorite routine of theirs, though it is not as well known as "Who's on First":

"What's the first thing you buy at a baseball park?"
"A hot dog...without mustard."
"No, no... Mustard was made for a hot dog."
"I don't care what the stuff was made for, I'm not going to eat it. I don't like it."
"Mustard and a hot dog goes together!"
"Let 'em GO together, I'm not going ta spoil any romance!! I mean, after all, if I don't like mustard, I don't have to eat it for you or nobody else..."
"Oh! You didn't tell me you didn't like it."
What're you, a big man? You tell me I gotta eat something, I gotta eat it? I mean, it's a free country! You can't go around saying to people, 'you gotta eat mustard'..."
"Sure, of course it is. I didn't mean to..."
"Mustard makes me sick in the tummy. After all, I got a wife and three kids. If I eat mustard, I get sick; I can't work. What happens to my wife and kids if I cant work for them? They go to the poor house! YOU'RE A FINE GUY, SENDING MY WIFE AND KIDS TO THE POOR HOUSE!!"
"Who's sending who where?"
"Whaddid my wife and kids ever do to you?!"
"Nothing."
"What right you got to put my wife and kids in the poor house?! COOOOOOME AAAAAAWN, GET MY WIFE AND KIDS OUTTA THE POOR HOUSE!!"

Then there's this MOST quotable of quotes: "A husband is what's left of a sweetheart after the nerve has been killed." And, at the tail end of the hospital sketch, if that isn't a recording of Spike Jones and his City Slickers they're playing, it's one from another group that sounds just like them.

There's another kinescope of A&C hosting the Colgate Comedy hour, here on IA. Though that one is mostly sketches, it is still funnier to me than their two movies, also here on IA. They started with burlesque and vaudeville, which made them naturals to host a variety show. Wish there were as many kinescopes of them here as there are of Red Skelton!
